The Wife

I speak from experience here when I say that visiting large retro gaming events isn’t always the first choice of our long suffering wives and girlfriends. Let’s be clear on this, I am not being sexist here as there are loads of girls that enjoy these games as much as us male geeks do, but that’s not who this entry is aimed at.

Some will stick around for a few plays of a game before getting bored while other might not even want to leave the hotel. Thankfully with the event being in Manchester there is an abundance of shops and other attractions for the non-games to indulge in.

The Kids

You can bet your bottom dollar that the kids will want to hang around and play some games. But you can also bet that many of them won’t be as willing to put up with those “rubbish graphics” and “stupid controllers”.

So it’s a good job that Play Manchester also caters for all the latest kids crazes too such as Minecraft, Fortnite, Virtual Reality and Room Tidying. Yeah ok, I might have made that last one up, but us parents can all hope and pray right?

Tremendous Traders

What if you don’t want to just play some games and you also want to buy some too? Well, you’ll be pleased to hear that the wonderful people at Play have you covered there too as there will be a huge range of stalls and traders to help empty your bulging wallet.

Not just games though either, you will also be able to buy T-shirts, figures, posters, key rings, books, hardware as well as food and drink. If you don’t spend some money on these stalls then I am sure your kids will for you!

Community Catch-Up

For me personally one of the main reasons I attend events like this is to meet up with my friends and the make some new ones too. The wider retro gaming community is a really friendly one and before you know it you’ll be propping up the bar with a famous You Tuber and some random person dressed up as Master Chief for the Cosplay Competition!

The fun doesn’t end when the event closes either as you’ll usually find that groups of people have organised different things to entertain everyone in the evening, often involving copious amounts of alcohol!
