Plague Inc. has actually been eliminated from sale in China at the instructions of the Chinese federal government, just weeks after the game skyrocketed in popularity in the country following the outbreak of COVID-19 (a.k.a. Coronavirus).

In a statement on developer Ndemic’s website, a spokesperson wrote: “We have some extremely unfortunate news to share with our China-based gamers. We’ve just been informed that Plague Inc. “includes material that is unlawful in China as determined by the Cyberspace Administration of China” and has been removed from the China App Store. This situation is totally out of our control.”

It’s unclear whether this move has been taken in action to the game’s success following the coronavirus break out, which came from China. Ndemic has said it’s working to reverse the choice by contacting the Cyberspace Administration of China to comprehend its reasoning.

Formerly, Ndemic had released a statement asking gamers not to depend on the video game for details about the spread of coronavirus– although the developer does tout the video game’s instructional value, with the United States Centre for Disease Control openly recognizing it. Absolutely nothing will change for the video game beyond China, but it’s a puzzling scenario.

China is notably limiting around computer game – in between 2000 and 2015 there was a ban on the production, import and sale of consoles and arcade makers and, as just recently as in 2015, the country legally banned children from playing games after 10 pm, to name a few provisions.
