10 Hidden Gems For The Nintendo Game Boy
Ninja Gaiden Shadow
Known as Shadow Warriors in the UK, this is actually a prequel to the ultra hard NES classics rather than a conversion of the classic Tecmo arcade game. The game opens with a fantastically animated cutscene setting up the character Ryu Hayabusa and the upcoming story. The difficulty curve is set slightly lower than its NES counterparts, although a slow and steady pace is often best to ensure movements and attacks are well timed. The graphical style is very similar to the NES games and matches the Game Boy well. The backgrounds look slightly faded at times, but are quite detailed and the sprites are well animated.
The gameplay mechanics are pretty tight allowing you to perform classic jump and slash movements with ease. The enemies are pretty varied and understanding their attack styles are key to ensuring you escape each encounter unscathed especially during the boss fights. A real gem for those who enjoy the Ninja Gaiden series or other tough platformers such as Mega Man.
