2 – Sprint Master

Despite re-using the very same artwork that appeared on the 2600 Pole Position box this game is in fact a conversion of Atari’s classic Super Sprint coin-op. This title is for one or two players as opposed to the three (plus computer making four) of the original arcade game however.

This late 1988 release manages to cram a lot into the cartridge, with not only a selection of different tracks but also different weather conditions too, which wasn’t even present in the original arcade game! You can race on ice or in the desert and bring a host of new challenges to the already excellent gameplay. It’s unusual to find this many options in an Atari 2600 title.

The graphics in Sprint Master are among the best on the system. From the superb title screen to the fake scaling technique that appears when your car goes over jumps! The sound is also very good with lots of great effects too. When it comes down the gameplay Sprint Master is once again spot-on, and extremely good fun against a friend in particular. It’s a shame that Atari didn’t at least give the option to re-use the driving controllers from the earlier Indy 500 though, as this would have made this classic title even better still.
