3 – Pole Position

Originally released in the arcades by Namco in 1982, Pole Position was one of the first games to come out of Atari’s long standing agreement with them to release their games in the west alongside titles like Dig Dug, Xevious and Rolling Thunder.

It went on to become the most popular arcade game of 1983 and even spawned its own cartoon series as well as a host of great home conversions, this being one of them. This Atari 2600 version is remarkably close to its arcade parent considering the huge difference in hardware and manages to include pretty much everything except the famous “Prepare to qualify” speech. This conversion is also lightening fast with the scenery flying past your F1 car as you race your way around the famous Fuji Speedway to the finish line.

The graphics here might be a bit blockier and less colourful than the arcade game but they look the part nonetheless. Atari also nailed the sound effects too as you hear the tires screech round every corner and the roar of the engines as you pass every car. One of the first truly great racing games released for a home system Pole Position is a title every self-respecting Atari 2600 owner should have in their collection.
