Top 10 Atari 2600 Racing Games
8 – Dragster
Undoubtedly one of the most popular games on this list, Activision’s Dragster is actually a direct clone of an obscure 1977 Atari arcade game called Drag Race. The only real difference between the two is the addition of colour graphics for the 2600.
The object of the game is simple – to cross the finish line in the fastest time possible. But this is not as easy as it sounds as you have to be careful not to rev the engine too hard and blow it! Dragster may have been one of the shortest video games of its era, which is really saying something, but it sure is fun while it lasts. Fun in single player, Dragster undeniably works best as a two-player game with screams of joy when your car crosses the finish line first and takes the chequered flag.
In more recent times the game has also become of the subject of one of the most hotly contested gaming world records out there. It was also caught up in scandal when it was revealed well-known video game cheat Billy Mitchell was complicit in the scores of one of his friends being faked.
