4 – Moto Rodeo

It never ceases to amaze me how complex and technically impressive some of these late Atari 2600 games are. One of only a few games to be released for the system in the nineties, Moto Rodeo recreates the thrill of monster trucks in eight bits!

The game is played split screen against either the computer or another player as you race across a course trying to score as many points as possible. You score these points by crushing cars, smashing down walls, jumping off ramps and landing on platforms. The player with the most points at the finish line wins! This isn’t all though, as there is also a large selection of different tracks, different vehicle types you can choose and also three difficulty levels too. You can even decide what type of wheels you want to have, tank-style tracks or huge rubber tyres.

Graphically Moto Rodeo is absolutely superb with high resolution sprites and nicely designed courses. It also has some great sound effects too that fit the action perfectly. While the game is certainly very enjoyable against the computer it’s even when playing against another player. I certainly can’t think of many other split-screen games on the ol’ Atari 2600!
