Top 10 Atari 2600 Racing Games
7 – Grand Prix
And from one Activision racing game to another that takes a very different form. Programmed by one David “Pitfall” Crane, Grand Prix perfects a technique he first mastered while working at Atari to display huge sprites on the Atari 2600.
This one take a top down view but rather than racing vertically, like most games of this type, Grand Prix uses horizontal scrolling. The idea of the game is to complete your race in the shortest time possible. This would be easy if it wasn’t for all those other cars hogging the road! You’ll need to pass all of them without crashing if you are going to enter the hall of fame and earn yourself one of those legendary Activision patches.
There’s no doubting that Grand Prix is an extremely impressive game from a technical perspective with its large colourful graphics and terrific speed. But it’s also an incredibly enjoyable game to play too and presents one of the best pure racing games available for the Atari 2600.
