Top 10 Atari 2600 Racing Games
1 – Enduro
Activision are renowned as having made some of the best games for the Atari 2600 over the years and Enduro is often mentioned in this category. And for good reason as I wasted many hours playing this game when I was younger.
Programmed by Larry Miller, who sadly only made one other Atari 2600 game in the excellent Spider Fighter, it at first looks like a rip-off of Atari’s own Pole Position but is actually so much more than that. In Enduro the idea is to try and pass a set number of cars within an entire day. As the days go on you are required to pass more cars thus making the game much tougher. Each day is wonderfully represented by the changing graphics, you start off at sunrise and end up racing through the night in pitch black with just the lights on the cars to guide you! There are also varying weather conditions too with icy conditions that make you lose grip and fog that reduces your visibility.
There really is a fantastic array of different scenarios in this game that all add immensely to the enjoyment. The graphics are great, the sound is likewise and the gameplay never gets dull. Enduro is definitely the best racer on the Atari 2600 and has really stood the test of time.
