Top 10 Atari 2600 Racing Games
5 – Bump ‘n’ Jump
A conversion of the 1982 coin-op hit by Data East, this down racer was converted to the Atari 2600 by M Network. Again, this game offers something pretty different to the others on this list being far more about fun than any kind of realism!
In Bump ‘n’ Jump the goal is to drive from the beginning of a level to the end while bumping the other road users into obstacles and jumping over various hazards such as bodies of water. Due to the bird’s eye view, you can’t see the larger obstacles until it’s too late to jump, so the game displays a flashing exclamation point when these hazards are about to appear. The other vehicles come in two different types – cars and trucks. Whilst the cars can be bumped into obstacles or jumped upon, the trucks can only be destroyed by jumping on them.
Mattel did a great job of porting this over to the Atari 2600, it stays incredibly faithful to the original arcade game in almost every area. I was even surprised to find that it has in-game music too, something you rarely hear on the Atari 2600.
